2018-03-06: Grounding off Lisboa. In the early morning of March 6, 2018, the 'Betanzos' ran aground near the Bugio lighthouse at the mouth of the Tejo River after a power loss. The ship with a crew of 10 on board was at the mercy of the tide and was dragged onto a sandbank next to the lighthouse. Refloating attempts will only begin at the end of the afternoon, when the tide will rise again. The ship had left the Beato terminal in Lisbon bound for Casablanca, Morocco. Bron:
2018-03-07: Salvage attempts failed so far.
Salvage efforts of the sand loaded "Betanzos" which grounded at the mouth of the river Tagus, off Lisbon, on March 6 at 1 a.m., had to be postponed at 8 p.m. The ship's anchor was hampering the salvage operations. At 6:20 p.m., at the peak of the tide, an attempt was made to tow the ship, which had recovered energy and propulsion, but the anchor was trapped in the bottom and could not be recovered despite the attempt of the tugs, with the aid of the ship. The tugs continued to try, but the tide was going out and it was decided to start a new attempt with the next flood on March 7 at 5 a.m. In the morning, the patrol boat "Ria Formosa" (MMSI: 263062001) was alongside the ship. The 10 crew members, among them seven Gallegos, the captain and an officer from Asturias and a Canary, were safe on board. There was no danger to neither human lives, the ship nor to navigation. 2018-03-09: Grounded ship evacuated.
A strong storm was due to hit Lisbon in the night of March 8 and expected to continue throughout March 9, so for precautionary reasons, all 14 people aboard the "Betanzos" were taken off in the afternoon at 4 p.m. by an EH 101-Merlin-helicopter from Lusa and dropped off at the Montijo Air Base. Among them were 10 crew members, two members of the Dutch salvage company hired by the owners to oversee salvage operations, and two representatives of the owner who had come on board after the grounding. 2018-03-10: Grounded ship withstood stormy night
The "Betanzos" withstood the night without structural damage. There was no danger of the 140 tons of fuel and about 29 tons of oily waste polluting the sea as they distributed in several relatively small tanks, and the crew, before leaving the ship, took care to seal all the tanks. 2018-03-12: Salvage operations resumed.
The operations to refloat the "Betanzos" off Bugio at the mouth of the Tagus, were resumed on March 12 around 9 a.m. Six members of Smit Salvage were preparing towing wires, and four crew members of the cargo ship arrived at 8:30 a.m. at the Montijo Air Base, and then a helicopter was to be deployed by the Air Force to take them aboard the ship. 2018-03-14: Grounded ship moved 80 meters.
By March 14 at 7 p.m. the "Fairmount Alpine" had managed to pull the "Betanzos" 80 meters from its initial position, but the ship did not advance as expected from its grounding site near the Bugio Lighthouse at the Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio in the Oeiras municipality. Salvage efforts began on March 13, continued at lunchtime on March 14 and were resumed tat 11:30 p.m., taking advantage of the rising tide, which was on March 15 at 2:20 a.m. It was hoped to slowly move the vessel to a deeper position, which allowed it to float and thus salvors could start the tow for Lisbon. 2018-03-16: Betanzos refloated.
On March 16 at 2:30 a.m. the "Betanzos" was finally refloated. The "Faairmount Alpine" started to increase the pull at midnight and managed to move the vessel to a deeper zone. In the morning hours the tugs "Monte Da Luz", "Montemuro" and "Montevil" gathered around the ship in order to pull it to the Beato Dock in Lisbon. The "Fairmount Alpine" with its 2.000-meter-towing wire was not suitable for this task. The "Betanzos" should arrive around 10:00 a.m. at the wharf where it will be inspected with particular care for the propeller and the rudder. In the keel zone, the bottom of the ship probably would not have any damage, but the fact that the propeller has been in contact with the sand may have caused some damage and this has to be evaluated. Also it was to be decided if the anchor which was cut off would have to be recovered before the ship can sail.
