In the night of Dec 19, 2015, around 10.30 p.m. the "SCHELDEGRACHT" ran aground in the southern part of the Great Belt. The ship had not reported the grounding at Albue Flak, ca. 1,5 miles east of the fairway. It was another ship, which notified the grounding. The cause of the grounding was yet unknown, but there was no suspicion of drug consumption. It was believed to have been caused a system error when the ship appeared to have made a change ahead of time. The vessel which has a depth of about 10.5 meters ran aground at a speed of about 14 knots on sandy bottom. It had sailed from Rauma with a cargo of 17,000 tonnes of paper and was headed to Skagen. The Danish Navy dispatched the environmental ship "Marie Miljø" from Korsør which arrived on Dec 20 at 4:40 a.m. The "Westsund" refloated the "Scheldegracht" in the Langelands Belt about 10 kilometers west of Nakskov on Dec 21 after the Danish Maritime Authority has given permission to do so. The grounding was caused navigational errors so that the ship turned into the Great Belt at the wrong time.
