1919-12-28: Final Fate:
1919-12-30: St John, NF, 30 December 1919: Three exhausted and half-frozen men, sole survivors of the crew of twenty-nine of the Belgian steamship ANTON VAN DRIEL, were brought here today on the steamship INGRAHAM. For two days and two nights the three men had clung to the wreck of their ship as it lay on the jagged rocks that barred the entrance to St Mary's Bay. They had watched the death of their comrades and felt the ship beneath them give way, piece by piece, under the merciless pounding of a terrific sea. The rescue of the three survivors was accomplished by the INGRAHAM against tremendous odds. The spot where the ANTON VAN DRIEL was wrecked in a mass of rocks and ledges extending far to sea on the floor of precipitous cliffs. It was regarded by sailors as inaccessible to any craft except in the calmest weather, and the great storm which brought down the Belgian ship was still raging when the INGRAHAM arrived. Attempt after attempt was made by the rescuers to reach the wreck and each time they were beaten back by the furious sea. It was only after hours of effort and at the imminent peril of their lives, that the men of the INGRAHAM reached the three survivors and brought them to safety. Shortly after the ANTON VAN DRIEL was hurled on the rocks Sunday evening the lifeboats were launched in an attempt to make the brief journey through the giant breakers ton the shore. Almost instantly the boats were swept away and dashed in pieces against the cliffs. Four men had preferred to stick to the wreck, and a fifth, by a freak of the waves, was swept back to the deck of the vessel after the lifeboat in which he had embarked was smashed. The remaining twenty-four were drowned. Throughout Sunday night and Monday the five clung desperately to the bridge of the wreck. Overhead the fisherfolk on the mainland watched the battle for life from the tops of the cliffs, powerless to aid. Monday afternoon two of the survivors lost consciousness and instantly were swept to their deaths. The remaining three, including the man whom the sea once before had refused to accept, held out for nearly twenty-four hours longer and were saved.
