1976-03-26: NvhN 26-03-1976: Carebeka BV bestelt nog een 3100-tonner. Carebeka BV te Groningen heeft de scheepswerf Amels BV te Makkum opdracht gegeven voor de bouw van een zusterschip van de Carebeka VIII. Het nieuwe schip moet in maart van het volgend jaar in de vaart komen. Het gaat 3100 ton d.w. meten. De afmetingen van deze zusterschepen zijn: lengte 81 meter, breedte 13,80 m, holte 6,54 m en diepgang 5,37 m. De tonnage is 1599 brt. Evenals de Carebeka VIII krijgt het nieuwe schip een Nohab Polar motor van 2640" pk, waarmee een snelheid van 12 knopen kan worden gehaald. De capaciteit is: voor granen 139.000 kubieke feet en 130.000 kub feet voor balen. De Carebeka VIII werd in februari j.l. opgeleverd. Haar zuster krijgt de naam Carebeka IX.

Dit is een zusterschip van de Carebeka VIII, dat op dezelfde werf (eigendom van Amels b.v. te Makkum) gebouwd werd. 1977-02-28: Als "Carebeka IX", zijnde een motorschip, metende 4527.80 m3 bruto inhoud volgens zeemeetbrief afgegeven te 's Gravenhage no 17992 d.d. 15-02-1977, liggende te Harlingen, door T. van 't Hof, ambtenaar van de Scheepsmetingsdienst te Groningen, van brandmerk 4769 Z GRON 1976 voorzien door het inbeitelen op het achterschip aan S.B. zijde in het achterschot van het dekhuis op de kampanje 3.85 m. uit hekplaat, 4.00 m. uit de lengteas en 1.47 m. uit dek.
2009-04-08: Aan de grond gelopen op een zandbank nabij Boston-UK. Met assistentie is het schip 9 uur later vlotgebracht en had na inspectie geen waterlekkage. 16-04-2009 vertrokken uit Warrenpoint, na enige inspecties weer in de vaart. Op 11-05-2009 aangekomen te Kaliningrad voor een dokbeurt.
2011-11-27: Final Fate:
Vertrokken van Workington naar Cowes met 8 Russische opvarenden, geladen met 3.000 ton kalksteen, 27-11-2011 tijdens slecht weer (windkracht 8 noordwest met ruige zee) geknikt en lek geraakt, om circa 02:00 uur de Coastguard van Holyhead, North Wales gebeld voor hulp, gezonken in de Ierse Zee op 3,8 mijl van het schiereiland Lleyn, Wales, 2 opvarenden konden zich vastklampten aan een reddingsboot en werden per helikopter van RAF Valley (Anglesey) (co-piloot Flt. Lt. William Wales (Prince William, Duke of Cambridge), in veiligheid gebracht, 1 overleden bemanningslid geborgen en 5 opvarenden vermist. Wreck details: Date Lost 27th November 2011. They were employed on 4-month contracts, but this duration could be varied.
The deceased. The master, Yury Shmelev, was 44 years old and had sailed on Swanland since 2006 as the chief officer. Recently promoted, this was his first contract as master and he had joined the vessel on 29 June 2011. He held a STCW 8 II/2 Certificate of Competency endorsed by MCI and had gained practical ship-handling experience on board Swanland under the guidance of previous masters. He spoke good English.The chief officer, Leonid Safonov, was 50 years old and had sailed on board Swanland as an AB in 2006.
In 2010, he joined the vessel as chief officer for the first time; he joined Swanland for the last time on 29 June 2011. The chief engineer, Gennadiy Meshkov, was 52 years old and had joined the vessel to start his 11. The contract on board since 2004 on 19 March 2011. The second engineer, Mikhail Starchevoy, was 60 years old and had joined the vessel to start his sixth contract on board since 2006 on 20 September 2011. The bosun, Sergey Kharchenko, was 51 years old and had joined the vessel to start his ninth contract on board since 2004 on 15 October 2011. The cook, Oleg Andriets, was 49 years old and had joined the vessel on 19 May 2011. He had previously sailed on other ships managed by Torbulk Limited (Torbulk) since 2006. However, this was his first contract on board Swanland. The survivors: The second officer was 27 years old and joined Swanland for his second contract on board on 15 October 2011. The AB was 48 years old and joined the vessel on 5 August 2011.
2011-11-28: Search Continues for Six Seafarers Missing on the Irish Sea, Two rescued. Holyhead Coastguard is currently coordinating the search for six merchant seafarers who are missing in gale force weather 10 miles west of the Lleyn peninsula, Gwynedd. The 81-metre cargo carrier, SWANLAND broadcast a mayday message at 2.00 am this morning. The ship reported that their hull was cracking, due to bad weather and that they thought that it may be taking water. Holyhead Coastguard broadcast a mayday relay and several vessels responded. Two of these vessels were able to go to the assistance of the Swanland and its eight crew. When the two vessels arrived at the scene, they found two liferafts and some floating debris. They were able to provide shelter from the gale force winds, whilst awaiting the arrival of rescue resources. Meanwhile Holyhead Coastguard had scrambled the two rescue helicopters from RAF Valley and Dublin Coastguard and requested the launch of the Pwllheli and Porth Dinllaen RNLI all weather lifeboats. The search for five missing men from the SWANLAND that sank in the Irish Sea on Nov 27, 2011, has been called off for the evening. British coastguards have acknowledged that at this stage the operation is now about recovering bodies as opposed to finding survivors. The search for the five missing Russians had resumed at first light at 8 a.m in the morning of Nov 28. Most of the efforts were concentrated on a 210km stretch of Welsh coastline, where 11 teams from the Holyhead coastguard scoured the shoreline with the help of a police helicopter. The Irish Coastguard and Navy assisted in the search on Nov 27 but their involvement was not requested on Nov 28. The survivors had reported the hull had cracked about 45 km northwest of the Welsh Lleyn peninsula after the ship was hit by an “enormous” wave, causing it to roll over and beeaking in half. It sank within 15 minutes. The "Swanland" had arrived at Raynes Jetty in Workington port on Nov 24 and unloaded stone before leaving on Nov 25. Workington was its last port of call. Three Irish Coast Guard helicopters, the Naval Service patrol ship "LE Roisín" and an Air Corps Casa maritime patrol aircraft were tasked by Holyhead Coast Guard in one of the largest joint rescues undertaken by Irish and British rescue agencies in the Irish Sea. The Irish units worked with RAF Valley and Chivenor search and rescue helicopters and RNLI lifeboats from Pwllheli and Porthdinllaen, along with other vessels in the area. The helicopters refuelled at the RAF Valley station. Rescue attempts ended before darkness last night. The two survivors were wearing immersion suits with strobe lighting. Five of the crew were on deck and three were below, including the captain, engineer and first mate. It was believed they had no time to escape and were among the five still missing last night. The RNLI reported two liferafts and some floating debris on the sea surface when their lifeboats arrived on the scene, but there was no sign of the ship. The "Swanland" was carrying 3,000 tonnes of limestone to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. An investigation into the sinking is expected to focus on weather factors and the extent of the swell in the Irish Sea, the ship’s maintenance history and the layout of the cargo on board. It was expected that any pollution risk from the ship’s hull would be monitored by the British authorities.
2012-01-00: Wreck of SWANLAND to be surveyed. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is to use a robot submarine to survey the wreck of the Swanland off the north Wales coast which sank carrying 3,000 tonnes of limestone during a storm in November 2011. A surviving sailor had said the hull broke after the vessel was struck by a giant wave off Lleyn. An exclusion zone has been established 15 miles west of the peninsula whilst the survey work is carried out. The exclusion zone has a one mile radius centred at 52-52.06N 005-05.03W. The investigation is expected to take several months. In December an investigation found the ship had been at the centre of repeated safety concerns. An analysis of safety inspection records for the Swanland revealed a high number of failings. Members of the crew claimed the vessel was vulnerable in rough seas because of a history of unsafe loading. The search for five missing crewmen, among them the chief engineer, 2nd engineer, deckhand and cook, was called off on Nov 29.
2012-11-26: Investigation in ship's loss going on. An investigation is underway a year after the "SWANLAND" sank off North Wales with the loss of six lives. The ship was sailing from Colwyn Bay to the Isle of Wight with a cargo of limestone and was was off Bardsey Island when its was struck by a huge wave, causing severe damage. The crew made a Mayday call at 2.03 a.m. on Nov 27, 2011, and a major rescue operation was launched. But despite the efforts of lifeboats, helicopters and other ships, six men lost their lives. Two of the crew were plucked to safety by an RAF helicopter. They described how the large wave broke the ship’s back. A third crewman was later found dead during a search for survivors. Immediately after the tragedy Maritime Accident Investigation Branch launched an inquiry. Part of the investigation has involved the use of small, remote-controlled submarines to carry out an underwater survey of the wreckage, an operation hampered by bad weather and rough seas. There has also been a detailed analysis of safety inspection records for the vessel carried out by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It has been reported MCA officials found a high number of failings. In August 2010 the "SWANLAND" had narrowly avoided grounding off Lizard Point, Cornwall, after her engines failed and she had to be towed into Falmouth. The ship’s operator, Grimsby-based Torbulk Limited, said the vessel had been regularly inspected and any faults “promptly rectified”. The "SWANLAND" regularly travelled the route from the CEMEX’s Raynes Quarry near Colwyn Bay to Kingston Wharf on the Isle of Wight.
2012-12-04: The "SWANLAND" suffered a catastrophic structural failure before sinking, an investigation has found. The ship was in the middle of a gale force storm and 4-m-waves off the Gwynedd coast in November 2011. Giant waves snapped the hull of the ship, which was carrying quarry stone loaded at Raynes Jetty near Llanddulas. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch interim report said the ship sank in around 15 minutes. The report said two questions remained: "The causes of Swanland's catastrophic structural failure, and why only two of the vessel's eight crew survived". Two of the eight Russian crew managed to clamber aboard a life raft and were winched to safety by a rescue helicopter team from RAF Valley. RAF winchman Richard Taylor, who was part of a four-man team which included the Duke of Cambridge, won a bravery award for his efforts during the operation. The body of a third crew member was later recovered from the water but the bodies of the five remaining crew have never been found. The interim report says it expects to complete its investigation by the end of the year and publish a final accident report in April next year.
2014-05-19: Swanland crew inquest hears account of its last minutes. An inquest into the deaths of six Russian sailors after a cargo ship sank off Gwynedd has heard a dramatic account of its last minutes. The MV Swanland was taking a cargo of limestone from Llanddulas, near Colwyn Bay, to the Isle of Wight when it was hit by a massive wave during a gale. Just two of the eight-man crew survived when the ship sank in November 2011.Statements from the survivors said the vessel was hit by a big wave and an alarm prompted the crew to take action. The wreck was found one mile off the Welsh coast at a depth of 80 metres.Leonid Safonov, 50, Mikhail Starchevoy, 60, Oleg Andriets, 49, Gennadiy Meshkov, 52, Yury Shmelev, 44, and Sergey Kharchenko, 51, all died. I was under the water. All I can remember is that I was trying to swim up Roman Savin, One of the survivors The inquest in Caernarfon heard that Mr Safonov's body was the only one recovered and a post- mortem examination showed he had drowned. North West Wales Senior Coroner Dewi Pritchard Jones told the jury of seven he would be asking them to consider if the other men died in the same way. Statements from the two surviving crewmen Roman Savin, 27, and Vitaliy Karpenko, 48, were read to the jury. Second officer Roman Savin said he was on the bridge in the early hours of 27 November, 2011 when the ship was hit by a wave. He told the inquest he turned on the deck lights and could see the ship's mid-ship bulwark was bent. He sounded the alarm and members of the crew began putting on their immersion suits, while the ship's captain sent a mayday message. As he and other crew gathered on deck he said "we felt a blow to the ship". Rough "I was under the water. All I can remember is that I was trying to swim up." On the surface he swam to a life-raft and climbed in before helping the other survivor Vitaliy Karpenko climb into the same craft. They began shouting and whistling to attract the attention of other crew members but they did not spot any of them, the inquest heard. In his statement, Mr Karpenko described the conditions as rough but he said "we have worked in worse conditions". The inquest also heard from master air crewman Richard Taylor, who was the winchman on a rescue helicopter stationed at RAF Valley. He told the inquest the crew took off at 02:52 GMT, and having located the life-raft they searched for other survivors. They then picked up the two survivors and continued the search until about 05:30 GMT. "It was fairly rough so it was difficult conditions that night," he said. Paul Mangnall, the supervisor at Raynes Jetty where the ship docked, told the inquest it was loaded in the same way as it had been on other occasions.Glyn Aled Jones, a part-time shipping agent with responsibility for sorting paperwork regarding the the ship and her load, said there was nothing unusual with the ship or the loading of it that day. The hearing in Caernarfon is expected to last three days
